IMAP sometimes fails (from external mail client)

Hello,

Sometimes, the IMAP server refuses connection with the following error message:

* IMAP connection is un-authenticated

[07:15:00] IMAP4< 1 OK completed 
[07:15:00] IMAP4> Logging xxx.yyy@piratenpartei.ch to mail.piratenpartei.ch using LOGIN
** IMAP error on mail.piratenpartei.ch: stream error
** IMAP4 connection broken
[07:15:00] IMAP4< Error logging in to mail.piratenpartei.ch
*** Connection to mail.piratenpartei.ch failed: login refused.
*** Couldn't login to IMAP server mail.piratenpartei.ch.

The webmail works at the same time (meaning it's just an annoyance for now), and, yesterday, I got this error only in the morning (when I arrived at work, at about 8:00), the service was back at about 8:30 (as it was some non-blocking bug, I don't have the full log of yesterday attempts, so I don't have the exact time… Sorry).

In the mailserver logs at the time we did not find any failed logins.

I do fetch the emails every five minutes from my fetchmail setup and log every error that occurs. I could also not find such errors there. If it happens again, please provide us with an update at what times this occurs, so we can look it up in the logs.

We had a SSH tunnel working between load balancer and mail server cause of security default settings of dovecot and the capabilities of nginx. I think that this channel was sometime broken, had some messages inside.

I changed that setup, so this shouldn't happen again.

Just so that you can check the logs now:

It just happened now - Oli told me last Saturday to let you know with some timestamp if this happens again. So here it is.

Guess it will be up again in a few minutes.

Found the issue: I've upgraded the max count connections per user to higher number. I did that already but in the wrong config :-/

I also hit in this kind of friendly bug with some other mail server… hard to detect if we don't know what we're searching for.

Anyway, thanks for the fix !
